Coroner Visits Synagogue, Demands Lodgers’ List
Pastor T. B. Joshua

The coroner (a government official who confirms and certifies the death of an individual within a jurisdiction) investigating the cause of the September 12 Synagogue building collapse has demanded for the list of the people lodging in the building prior to the accident.

This demand was made on Thursday during a visit to the site of the collapsed building by the coroner, Magistrate O. A. Komolafe.

Komolafe, who made the demand, said the list would be an important complement to the work of the pathologists in identifying the corpses.

“We want to be able to identify all the victims, because those bodies will not be released to their relatives if we cannot identify them.

“They will be given mass burial, which is not appropriate,” Komolafe said.

The coroner reiterated that the mission of his court was not to convict anyone but to uncover the factor responsible for the collapse of the six-storey building.

“Like I said at the inaugural sitting, we are not here on a witch-hunt or to convict anybody. We are here for a fact-finding purpose and how we can ascertain the cause of the incident,” he added.

In his own submission, the Lagos State Chief Forensic Pathologist, Prof. John Obafunwa, who accompanied the coroner on the visit, buttressed the coroner, adding that there was no harm in making the list available to the court.

Obafunwa also delivered a formal letter addressed to the church requesting for the manifest.

He said, “In an investigation of this nature, we need to carry out our own tests. “DNA analysis will not give you a name. There is nothing wrong with what we are asking for.”

Responding on behalf of the Synagogue Church of All Nations, its lawyer, Chief Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), noted that the DNA of all the families of the victims had been submitted to the pathologists more than two weeks ago.

Fagbemi reiterated that the church was ready to cooperate with the coroner in unravelling the cause of the building collapse, adding that the requested list would be provided by his client.

The Chief Security Officer of the church, Mr. Sunday Okojie, received the coroner and his entourage on behalf of the church.

While conducting the team round the site of the incident, Okojie showed them the CCTV which captured the events shortly before and after the building collapsed.

Others who went on the visit with the coroner were the Lagos State Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Mr. Toyin Ayinde, and the lawyer for the state government, Mr. Akingbolahan Adeniran.

Also on the visit were the representatives of the Nigeria Police Force, the Red Cross Society and the Lagos State Emergency Management Authority.

The next sitting of the coroner court has been fixed for October 24, 2014.

Man abandons children in boarding school for eight years
The children

Three children abandoned in a boarding school in Abule-Iroko in the Ado-Odo Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State are longing to meet their parents who have abandoned them for eight years.

When Punch Metro visited Solid Model College, the children recounted their ordeal, noting that the absence of their parents was affecting their studies.

Seun Adepegba, 14,Seyi, 10 and Titilola, 13, had been severed from parental love and care since infanthood. After waiting for eight years, they seemed to have relinquished all hopes of reuniting with their parents.

It was learnt that their tale of sorrow began in 2007 when their father, Mr Segun Adepegba, who had been separated from their mother, enrolled them in the boarding school because he could not afford to take care of them.

According to the proprietor of the school, Mr Samuel Ayegbusi, Adepegba came to enroll them in his school on September 24, 2007 with a promise to always check on them.

He said, “Mr. Adepegba told me his wife had just left him and that he could not afford to take care of them, being a jobless man. The children were very little. Seyi was two, while Titilola was five.

“Mr Adepegba had pleaded with me to accept them in the boarding school. Mr Adepegba’s sister promised to bear the cost of their upkeep. They paid an initial N150, 000 for the three children for the first term.”

But according to the proprietor, Adepegba never kept his promise. He said after the first term, the school expected him to come and take his children home for holiday but he never showed up until four years later. He said the school had expended over N7m on the upkeep of the children since 2007.

The proprietor said efforts to reach the parents’ families had proved abortive, adding that calls to Adepegba’s phones were not always answered.

He said, “Whenever we called him and he realised who was talking on the phone, he would switch off his phones and for the next two weeks, the numbers would not be available. When the school contacted their father’s sisters, we were told that they had travelled out of the country.

“When we called one of them, we were told that they had sent money to Mr Adepegba to defray the children’s school fees and upkeep. But Mr. Adepegba has never come here to make any payment since the initial deposit he made in 2007.”

According to the proprietor, taking care of the children had further become cumbersome for him as one of them, Titilayo, had started misbehaving. He recounted how Titilayo ran away from the hostel twice without informing the school authority on the excuse that she was going to look for her father.

Ever since she was found, the proprietor said the school had had to keep her in a room, under tight surveillance, because she had vowed to run away to find her father.

He said, “The school is not even bothered by the cost of their upkeep. But anytime the school closed for holiday and parents come around to take their children home, Titilayo would fall into a sober mood and twice, she had run away from the hostel without informing anyone. It was a resident who stopped her and brought her back to the school.

Some of the teachers during the visit, said the absence of the children’s parents was seriously affecting their studies. They said the appearance of their parents would boost their academic performance.

While recounting their days with their father, the children said he celebrated birthdays with them. They said they had never met their mother.

Titilayo said, “We do not know who our mother is. We grew up in Yaba, Lagos and all we remember is that there was a woman that washed our clothes and took care of us until we came here. We knew she was not our mother.”

Seyi, the youngest of the trio, however, was an exception as she kept a cheerful look during the visit. Seyi, who told our correspondent her dream was to become a medical doctor said, “Although I have a faint memory of my father, I will like to see him. If he comes today, I will ask him why he left us for so long.”

Seun added, “I don’t care how long he has left us. I just want to see him. I really need to see him.” When Adepegba was called on Thursday, his phones were switched off.

Jonathan, PDP Governors Debate Buhari Challenge

Jonathan, PDP govs debate Buhari challenge
President Goodluck Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan has warned the Peoples Democratic Party governors against backing unpopular candidates as their successors in their respective states.

This is one of the issues discussed at the meeting the President had with the governors at the Presidential Villa, Abuja on Sunday night.

The meeting ended in the early hours of Monday.

The meeting was said to have discussed the presidential ambition of a former Head of State, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) on the platform of the All Progressives Congress.

While some of the governors were said to have asked the President for “a Buhari challenge”, others were said to have dismissed it, saying that the former leader could not defeat the President in 2015 if he emerged as the candidate of the APC.

President Jonathan was said to have invited the governors to the meeting over the growing complaints of endorsements in their states.

A source at the meeting, who spoke with one of our correspondents on condition of anonymity, said the President said he was not against the governors picking and working for their preferred candidates as their successors.

The source said, “The President said he was not against us (governors) picking our candidates, but that we should make sure we have a popular person without blemish. He said such a candidate must also be acceptable to the generality of the members of the party in our states and that the candidates must be able to win the election.

“It is wrong to say the President is against us. He also said that we should also make sure that the candidate must have a clean record so that the opposition will not capitalise on this against such a candidate at the election petition tribunal.”

The source said that the meeting also discussed the desire of some of the governors to vie for senatorial seats on the platform of the party.

While saying that no concrete agreement was reached on this, he said the meeting agreed that there would be another round of discussions, which he said would involve the national leadership of the party.

The issue of senatorial seats involving the governors and sitting senators is also causing confusion in some states as senators who the governors are angling to replace are said to be demanding that they should be made to also replace their state governors in 2015.

“If the governors want to take our position, they should also allow us to take their positions as governors,” one of the aggrieved senators was said to have complained to the President.

Earlier, some state governors who spoke with State House correspondents at the end of the meeting had confirmed that the President summoned the parley to enable them to further strategise ahead of the 2015 elections.

Governor Theodore Orji of Abia State said the meeting devised means of ensuring that the party’s primaries were rancour-free.

He said, “We discussed our party and the primaries that will soon come. We looked at how to fortify our party to avoid rancour or infighting to enable us to do very well both in the primaries and general elections in 2015.”

He said the issue of the alleged rancour between state governors and members of the party’s National Working Committee over endorsements of candidates was not discussed at the meeting.

He however assured all stakeholders that the party’s primaries would be free and fair.

Governor Ibrahim Shema of Katsina State, Governor James Ngilari of Adamawa State and the deputy governor of Kogi State, Yomi Awoniyi, also corroborated Orji’s position.

Ceasefire Collapses As Army Fights Back

Ceasefire collapses as army fights back
Chief of Army Staff - Lt. Gen. Kenneth Minimah

The Nigerian troops seem to have abandoned the ceasefire between the Federal Government and Boko Haram as they killed 25 insurgents in Damboa, Borno State on Sunday.

Boko Haram was the first to abandon the ceasefire when it attacked two communities in Borno and Adamawa states.

Damboa was for several days in July under the control of the insurgents who killed some soldiers, including a Lieutenant Colonel. They had also hoisted their flag in the community which is only about 85 kilometres away from Maiduguri.

The military however succeeded in chasing them but on Sunday night, the terrorists staged a comeback but were overpowered by the “military during an exchange of gunfire.”

Boko Haram had on Friday, the day the Chief of Defence Staff, Air Chief Marshal, Alex Badeh, announced the ceasefire, attacked Shafa and Sina in Borno and Adamawa states.

Just as the attacks were viewed as a breach of the ceasefire, the insurgents struck again in Borno State where they captured Abadam village and beheaded six people on the Biu-Garkida Road on Sunday.

A military source was however quick to dismiss the belief that attacks by the insurgents amounted to a collapse of the ceasefire.

He had said, “One cannot say the peace deal has been violated; it is the nature of most terrorist organisations to act that way, and it should be expected because they have several layers of operation.’’

But findings on Sunday by The Punch had revealed that the Federal Government might have entered into the deal with a faction of the group interested in ending the insurgency in the North-East.

A Federal Government team is to meet on Tuesday(today) with representatives of the sect in Ndjamena to conclude the talks being brokered by Chadian President Idris Deby.

The military source, who spoke with our correspondent on the Damboa incident, said there was no way the troops on the ground would have watched the militants overrun the community without confronting them.

“Since we just couldn’t watch them overrun the town again, we engaged them in crossfire,’’ he said.

The source, who did not want his name in print because he was not authorised to speak on the development, added, “We were able to effectively repel them. Twenty five of them were killed during the heavy shoot-out. We also recovered several arms and ammunition as well as a Buffalo Armoured Personnel Carrier which they abandoned in the heat of the confrontation that lasted some hours.”

He was however silent on the casualty figure.

In Maiduguri, a vigilante member, Abba Mohammed, said that the insurgents invaded the already deserted Damboa at about 5pm on Sunday.

He said, “Some of our members in Damboa informed us early this (Monday) morning that the attack was repelled and that more than two dozen insurgents were killed.

“We were told that the insurgents came from the direction of Sambisa Forest Reserve and drove in several pickup vans and vehicles that looked like APC.

“They engaged the military in a massive shoot-out for some hours but when about 25 of them were killed, they had to pull back towards the direction they came from.”

Despite this, the Borno State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria on Monday said it welcomed the truce talks between the Federal Government and Boko Haram.

It said in a communiqué issued at the end of its three-day fasting and prayer for Christians that the breach of the ceasefire by the insurgents should not deter the government from following it to a logical conclusion.

The state CAN Chairman, Rev. Titus Pona, who read the statement said since the insurgents had expressed their desire for peace, government must take advantage of it by playing along.

He said, “We the Christian faithful in Borno State commend the Federal Government for agreeing with the Jama’atul Ahalis Sunna Lida’awati popularly called the Boko Haram for a ceasefire.

‘‘We are happy with the ceasefire, although we heard some reports suggesting attacks by some suspected insurgents lately. We believe it is only a faction that is not interested in the peace process.

‘‘We assume that the Chibok girls and other people in their captivity are alive and well.

“We pray that the offer for ceasefire will be stuck to and come to reality in order to have the abducted ones released and for an end to the insurgency ravaging Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states and other parts of the country.’’

How Nigeria Defeated Ebola

How Nigeria Defeated Ebola
IFRC health worker

Ninety three days after the American Liberia Patrick Sawyer imported the Ebola Virus Disease, EVD into Nigeria, the nation is officially Ebola-free.

Announcing the declaration yesterday, the World Health Organisation said 42 days had passed since the nation last reported a case. By the time the last case was reported on September 5, 2014, Nigeria had recorded 19 cases with eight deaths and 11 survivors.

Findings by Good Health Weekly, revealed that early preparation, proper coordination and a unified response and implementation plan, were crucial to the nation's success in winning the war.

In what was described as by the WHO as "world-class epidemiological detective work", Nigeria's immediate and rapid response to the Ebola threat was triggered off with identification of the index (first case), Patrick Sawyer, and subsequent isolation at the First Consultant Medical Centre, Obalende in Lagos.

Public health emergency

First was the declaration of the Ebola out break as a public health emergency in the country. As a follow up, the Federal government through the Federal Ministry of Health, and in collaboration with the Lagos State government, set up an effective overall coordinating Ebola Emergency Operations Centre, EOC.

The response team comprised of the FMOH, WHO, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and Medecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders). private companies, UNICEF, and the Lagos state and Rivers State health ministries, among others.

The training of local doctors and other responders was carried out with despatch even as adverts and requests for qualified medical staff were issued regularly to the public. Each suspected Ebola case was thoroughly investigated and treated on merit.

A robust contact tracing system in Lagos and Port Harcourt ensured that virtually every contact of all reported Ebola cases was identified, tracked down and closely monitored. The dedicated follow-up, supervision and regulated public enlightenment mechanism was deployed to manage the panic caused by the Ebola outbreak.

Managing the public fear and anxiety was one of the main challenges of the response, especially as it was the first time Nigerians were witnessing such outbreak.

Sustained social mobilisation on the warning signs and prevention methods in the form of social-media messages, were deployed to improve education and awareness and also to demystify the myths surrounding Ebola.

There was heightened vigilance and screening at the nation's borders which were kept open but screening of inbound and outbound passengers was stepped up significantly, even as preparations were being made to increase facility and manpower capacity in the event of more patients.

Reacting to the declaration of Nigeria as Ebola free nation, President, Association of General Private Medical Practitioners of Nigeria, AGPMPN, Dr. Anthony Omolola said it was welcome.

"WHO declaration is a welcome development for our country and it shows that when we are committed to doing anything we can do it well. Our effort in curtaining Ebola has remain a sample to the world. We need to commend all the health workers, the government in the manner in which the situation was reacted to and also the media need to be commended for their enlightenment role and dissemination of information at appropriate time.

"As the WHO is declaring us free, we should not forget those that had sacrificed their lives in ensuring that the country did not experience greater calamity," he pointed out.

Corroborating their views, Immediate Past President, Nigeria Medical Association, NMA, Dr Osahon Enabulele, said: "This shows that if the right support is given to the health sector and the players who are responsible for leadership play their part, Nigeria can begin to make move towards strengthening our healthcare system and all other countries are now learning from Nigeria's experience, which shows that there are actually potentials that can be explore if there are some level of sincerity and leadership commitment. So the development is laudable and I think Nigeria can begin to look at other areas of healthcare and not just be responding to crisis situation alone."

Also speaking on the development, President of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria, PSN, Pharm Olumide Akintayo said it was well deserved but cautioned against the country resting on its oars. "For once, response was very prompt and highly commendable. I have no doubt that this is recognition is merited but it is not time to go and sleep.

We must continue to put on the table, the finest tenets of professionalism."Akintayo who worried over the porous nature of the nation's borders called for even greater alertness. "Let us give kudos to the Federal government and the Lagos State government. However, we must continue our surveillance and monitor people coming in from the endemic zones, namely Sierra Leone and Liberia to a large extent."

The Immediate Past Deputy President, National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives, NANNM, Comrade Rasheed Tonade noted that for WHO to say Nigeria is Ebola free, judging from the fact that there has not been any case of Ebola in the last three weeks was a welcome development. "I can agree to it because available statistics have proven that.

There is nothing like Ebola now in Nigeria. We are only hearing about Ebola in US. I believe Nigeria should be declared Ebola free. We are up to the task but we should expand our treatment strategies to forestall future occurrence or outbreak as a nation. Our seaports and airports and other borders should be regularly and effectively monitored not only for Ebola but for other diseases that people may bring in from either land borders or any other border."

Oscar Pistorius Taken to Prison

Oscar Pistorius Taken to Prison
Paralympic athlete Oscar Pistorius escorted by police at the Pretoria High Court.

Oscar Pistorius looked like he was about to cry as he made his way down to the holding cells below the High Court in Pretoria on Tuesday, after being sentenced to five years behind bars.

The paralympian, convicted of culpable homicide for shooting dead his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, touched the hands of some of his relatives, including his uncle Arnold Pistorius and wife Lois, and exchanged a few words with them before he disappeared.

While leaving the court room Steenkamp's parents, June and Barry, both looked down at the stairs leading to the cells.

In addition to the five years, Judge Thokozile Masipa sentenced Pistorius to three years' jail, suspended for five years, for discharging a firearm in Tasha's restaurant in Melrose Arch, Johannesburg. The sentence would come into effect if he is found guilty of negligent use of a firearm in that period.

The two sentences would run concurrently.

Pistorius may end up spending only 10 months in prison, a justice department spokesman said.

"Five years in terms of the Criminal Procedure Act means the accused serves one-sixth of the sentence, which is 10 months," spokesman Mthunzi Mhaga said on his Facebook wall.

"And an offender or inmate can be considered for placement under correctional supervision which is processed by correctional services."

National Prosecuting Authority spokesman Nathi Mncube told reporters at court there was an "appetite" to appeal, but the facts needed to be examined.

"There is an appetite to appeal and we have 14 days to consider the law, and ensure the facts and the law allow us to appeal," Mncube said.

While the NPA had not been happy that Pistorius had been found guilty of culpable homicide and not murder, he said it was a "consolation" that Pistorius would go to jail.

Masipa said a suspended sentence would not be appropriate.

"I am of the view that a non-custodial sentence would send the wrong message to the community. On the other hand a long sentence would not be appropriate as it would lack mercy," she said.

"It will be a sad day if the impression was created that there was one law for the poor and one law for the rich and the famous."

She said a long prison sentence would "break" Pistorius, but a suspended sentence could see society losing faith in the justice system.

Masipa summarised the evidence of the witnesses who had testified during sentencing arguments, and singled out social worker and probation officer Annette Vergeer, and acting national correctional services commissioner Zach Modise for criticism and praise.

The defence had called Vergeer to argue that prisons did not have facilities to accommodate the disabled, and to recommend a sentence of three years of correctional supervision and 16 hours of community service a month over that period.

"I was not impressed by the evidence of Ms Vergeer," Masipa said.

Her evidence did not inspire confidence, she used outdated information, and was slapdash. Her evidence was perfunctory and unhelpful, she said.

"It was unhelpful... I find it quite disturbing from someone with 28 years of experience," she said.

On the other hand, Modise, who testified for the State, was a candid witness who described a department that was not perfect, but was improving.

"He did not paint a picture of a problem-free department, but of one which was making strides and moving with the times," she said.

Dealing with Pistorius using his disability in a bid to avoid jail, Masipa said: "There was a feeling of unease on my part as I listened to one witness after another placing an over-emphasis on the accused's vulnerability.

"Yes, he is vulnerable, but he also has excellent coping skills."

After proceedings, Barry Steenkamp said: "[We are] satisfied with the sentence... [it's] now time to go home."

Briefing reporters Pistorius's uncle Arnold said the athlete would "embrace" the sentence.

"As an uncle, I hope Oscar will start the healing process as he walks this path and serves the sentence."

The African National Congress Women's League said Pistorius's sentence signalled a sad day for women in South Africa.

"We are saddened by the judgment... we have never been happy with the conviction of culpable homicide, instead of murder," spokeswoman Jacqui Mofokeng said outside court.

"We call for the national prosecutions to appeal this sentence... and do it for our society."

Pistorius was driven out of the court in a police Nyala at noon, escorted by several police cars with lights flashing and sirens wailing.

Researchers Develop Quick Ebola Diagnosis Device

The new tool, developed by France's Atomic Energy Commission, could allow doctors to diagnose a patient with suspected Ebola in under 15 minutes.

France's Atomic Energy Commission said that the device, which has undergone trials at a high-security for validating the technique and prototype, would be available in Ebola-hit countries by the end of October for a clinical trial.

It further added that the tool, not yet approved by regulators, works by monoclonal antibodies reacting to the presence of virus in a tiny sample, which can be a drop of blood, plasma or urine.

French pharmaceutical company Vedalab is turning the process into a user-friendly kit called Ebola eZYSCREEN. Similar to a DIY pregnancy test, a positive result sees a small stripe showing up in a results window on the hand-held device.

The kit is simple to use in the field without any additional equipment, said the CEA, which also does non-nuclear research with a possible military or security application.

"Current tests, which are based on genetic detection of the virus, are highly sensitive but need special equipment, take between two and a quarter and two and a half hours and can only be carried out in a lab," the commission explained.

Scientists at the agency began working on the diagnostic tool in mid-August, when the epidemic in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone worsened. The achievement builds on previous Ebola research funded in part by the French defence ministry as part of its anti-bioterrorism programme.

This research had "saved more than a year" in development time of the diagnostic test, the CEA said. Other pharmaceutical teams are also working on fast diagnostic tools for Ebola.

They include Primerdesign, a spinoff company of Britain's University of Southampton, and Corgenix Medical Corp of the United States. The test is for the so-called Zaire ebolavirus, the strain now circulating in West Africa.

Moses Scores First Stoke City Goal, Chelsea Survive Scare
Victor Moses

Nigeria international Victor Moses got his first goal of the season on Saturday as Stoke City were held to a 2-2 draw by West Ham United at the Britannica Stadium.

The on-loan Chelsea winger bundled home from close range in the first half and Mame Biram Diouf doubled the advantage from Jonathan Walters’ cross shortly after the break.

West Ham, however, pulled one back on the hour mark before levelling score in the 72nd minute when Downing drilled in a shot that Asmir Begovic could not keep out.

The draw sees West Ham drop to fifth spot in the Premier League while Stoke slip down to 12th.

Chelsea were able to preserve their four-point lead in the Premier League with a narrow 2-1 win at home to local rivals Queens Park Rangers courtesy of an Eden Hazard’s penalty.

Oscar had given Chelsea the lead, latching on an assist from Cesc Fabregas, but Charlie Austin equalised for QPR just after the hour when he beat Thibaut Courtois with a clever back-heel from Leroy Fer’s cross-shot to claim his third goal in two games.

Hazard gave Chelsea victory in the 75th minute when he calmly beat Rob Green from 12 yards after he had gone down under a challenge by Eduardo Vargas.

Southampton are second in the log after beating Hull City 1-0.

Kenyan midfielder Victor Wanyama scored the game’s only goal in the third minute at the KC Stadium, brilliantly lobbing Eldin Jakupovic from 40 yards after the Hull goalkeeper scuffed his clearance. Arsenal climbed into the Champions League places after Alexis Sanchez scored twice in a 3-0 success at home to winless bottom club Burnley.

Defender Calum Chambers crossed for Sanchez to head Arsenal in front in the 70th minute and smashed home his first senior goal two minutes later after Tom Heaton parried a shot by Danny Welbeck. Sanchez added a third in injury time from a Kieran Gibbs cross.

Arsene Wenger’s side, who welcomed Theo Walcott back from a long-term knee injury, moved into fourth place at the expense of West Ham United, who came from two goals down to record a 2-2 draw at Stoke City.

60 APC Reps form human shield around Tambuwal
Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Aminu Tambuwal

Following the withdrawal of the security details attached to the Speaker of the House of Representatives Speaker, Aminu Tambuwal, 60 All Progressives Congress members of the House now move around with him to serve as security for the Speaker.

Sunday Punch learnt the 60 Reps have been accompanying Tambuwal around Abuja to protect him against potential security threats.

The lawmakers do not only drive along with him in a motorcade, they also form a shield around Tambuwal to protect him.

Tambuwal had, on Tuesday in Abuja formally defected from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress, following weeks of speculation and intrigues.

One of the lawmakers providing shield for Tambuwal, Mr. Ahmad Ali, said, “We are covering him and we will continue to fight this illegality until it is quashed.

“We all went with him to the (Federal High) court today (Friday) to challenge the withdrawal of his security personnel.”

Ali, who is the Chairman, House Committee on Justice, said the members would do everything within their power to protect Tambuwal.

Tambuwal and the APC have since defended his defection, claiming that the PDP had factions, in addition to arguing that the courts have yet to resolve pending cases on defection before them.

It was also learnt that the speaker and his loyalists were working to ensure that the alleged plot by the Presidency and the PDP caucus to reconvene the House before December 3 is frustrated.

Tambuwal had adjourned the House till December 3 soon after he defected to the APC from the PDP on Tuesday last week, a decision that did not go down well with the Presidency and the PDP leadership.

The PDP caucus declined to comment on the alleged plot to reconvene the House before December 3.

When contacted, House Deputy Leader, Mr. Leo Ogor, instead called for the restoration of Tambuwal’s security personnel.

There have been fears within the APC quarters that the Presidency and the PDP may be pushing for the reconvening for the members to pick a new speaker.

Tambuwal’s defection is being considered as not only an embarrassment to the party, most party loyalists see it as an affront which should not go unpunished.

It was gathered in Abuja, on Friday, that the national leadership of the PDP was at a loss over how best to compel its members of the House to face this challenge.

Leading members of the party hierarchy, who pleaded for anonymity for fear of retribution, confirmed the party’s dilemma.

They noted that the timing of the speaker’s defection made things difficult for the party because it happened at a time the party could not guarantee any of its members in the House an automatic ticket.

A member of the National Working a Committee of the party, who spoke with one of our correspondents also on the condition of anonymity, said they would rather support the Presidency in dealing with Tambuwal.

He said the party was already considering a scenario whereby some of its aggrieved members would return after the party’s primaries and pit their tents with Tambuwal if they lose out.

He said, “But we are also not resting on our oars. We will win more and lose few, we know how to deal with the situation.”

Asked to expatiate on how the party intends to deal with the situation, he said the party would go to court and challenge the defection and also work on the other members of the leadership of the House to see if they could muster enough courage to recall members of the House.

Another source said that the Federal Government and the party would not want Tambuwal to preside over the House during the debate on the 2015 budget.

Besides, he said the speaker could again use the opportunity to lambast President Goodluck Jonathan and the government for alleged poor implementation of the 2014 budget.

“You know he likes playing to the gallery. Even while he was with us in the PDP, he usually attacks the party and the Federal Government. The situation would be worse now that he has left us,” the source added.

It was also gathered that the party and the government was already working on Ihedioha with the hope of asking him to give a brief summary of the House finance.

The plan, it was gathered, was to refer the matter, if the books “are not clean enough,” to the Economic and Financial Crime Commission with a view of getting the speaker arrested.

It was also gathered that the party and the government was also considering how to frustrate his alleged governorship ambition in Sokoto State.

But up till Friday evening, the national leadership of the PDP claimed it was not aware of the withdrawal of the security details of Tambuwal.

The National Publicity Secretary of the party, Olisa Metuh, stated this in an interview with our correspondent in Abuja.

When told that the police boss had issued a statement to that effect, he said he had not read it.

Metuh said, “When did it happen? Today? I’m not aware. I have not read the statement anywhere and therefore I cannot comment on it.”

However, the opposition All Progressives Party is not resting on its oars and is preparing to do “battle” to protect the speaker.

The National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Lai Mohammed, said, “This level of impunity by the PDP-led administration will certainly not go unchallenged. I assure you.”

Assemblies of God Church Sacks General Superintendent

Assemblies of God Church sacks general superintendent
Rev. Paul Emeka

The Assemblies of God Church has announced the excommunication of its past General Superintendent, Rev. Paul Emeka, from the church.

But reacting to the development, Emeka told Sunday Punch the action was a “coup.”

While announcing the removal of its spiritual leader’s dismissal from the ministry with his pastoral certificate withdrawn, the church also announced the emergence of Rev. Chidi Okoroafor as the new General Superintendent of the church.

He was elected alongside three other principal officials and fifteen zonal representatives to form the new Executive Council of the church for the next four years.

The decisions were part of the resolutions reached by over 7,000 delegates of the church at the General Council meeting at its Evangel Camp, Okpoko in Ebonyi State.

At the council meeting, held every four years, the delegates reportedly decided on the excommunication after concluding that the ex-spiritual leader “had dragged the name of the church in the mud by instituting legal suits and using law enforcement agencies to witch-hunt some of their leaders.”

According to the Legal Adviser of the church, Barrister Abuka, the dismissal of Emeka was necessary and had paved the way to institute litigation against the former general superintendent, who was alleged to be “making moves with some members to take over the church.”

The church also claimed he was working with other alleged collaborators believed to be working at cross-purposes with the church’s leadership.

Commenting on the crisis rocking the church, Okoroafor said the measures were necessary to remove those whom he described as “dissidents bent on frustrating progress” in the church.

He confirmed that legal actions would be taken against Emeka and others seeking to take over the church through lawsuits.

Justifying the reasons for this, the new general superintendent said, “We cannot spiritualise legal issues. You can’t just be praying when somebody is taking you to courts. We would no long keep quiet and allow our property taken over or our accounts fraudulently run by them.”

He pointed out that the church had identified constitutional loopholes that Emeka and other capitalised on, stating that such sections would be properly addressed when an emergency council meeting holds next year.

However, the excommunicated general superintendent said that he stood for reconciliation. According to him, the church has been embroiled in some crises in which a former Governor of Ebonyi State, Sam Egwu and the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria intervened in the matter.

Emeka said, “By announcing my excommunication from the church, they are trying to instill fear into people so that they can distance themselves from me. I stand for reconciliation. I have committed no offence.

“But, some people in the church organised an illegal election to remove me by force from office. They would not allow me to complete my four-year tenure in office which started in 2010. They are even threatening my life. I have petitioned the Inspector-General of Police on that.”

Mubi Battle: 300 Nigerian Soldiers Flee to Cameroun

Mubi battle: 300 Nigerian soldiers flee to Cameroon again

No fewer than 300 Nigerian soldiers fled to Cameroon when Boko Haram insurgents overran Mubi, the second largest city in Borno State from security forces on Wednesday.

Cameroonian military sources told our correspondent that Nigerian soldiers fled the north-eastern part of Nigeria, where the insurgency launched by the sect was raging, and crossed the Nigeria-Cameroon border.

The sources also said more Nigerian troops might have fled to other border towns in Cameroon after the Mubi attack. However, he added that their number had yet to be ascertained.

Sunday Punch learnt that the deserting Nigerian soldiers would be moved away from the border areas to more secure locations, where they would be disarmed, fed and eventually repatriated to Nigeria.

The insurgents had taken over Mararaba Hildi, some few kilometres to Mubi town, on Tuesday, prompting a mass exodus of residents.

Hundreds of soldiers were said to have fled Mubi, which hosts two universities, as insurgents made advances to take over the town on Wednesday.

Speaking on Friday under the condition of anonymity, a senior Cameroonian military officer involved in the provision of welfare materials to the deserters, said, “They (Nigerian soldiers) are mostly around Boucla village in Bourha sub-division.

“So far, we can estimate the number of arrivals to be at about 300. These are the ones who arrived in uniform but we know that there are several others who shed their uniforms for civilian attires.”

The Mubi rout also forced thousands of Nigerian civilians to hit border villages in Cameroon in Benoue and Mayo Louti Divisions, and around Gachiga town.

It was, however, learnt that Cameroonian government was worried about the increasing number of refugees and where to keep them.

The relocation of Nigerian refugees was said to have become necessary as insurgents had previously attacked locations where fleeing Nigerian soldiers were housed.

Protests by indigenes of the border towns over attacks on the camps were said to have forced the Cameroonian government to adopt a policy of moving deserters far away from the border and out of the reach of Boko Haram.

It was further learnt that Cameroon had begun screening of deserters and refugees to prevent infiltration by insurgents.

“This time around, we are conducting a more thorough screening to avoid letting in Boko Haram infiltrators, who are known to inhabit the ranks of the Nigerian military,” an official of the Cameroonian government had told our correspondent in confidence.

Another Cameroonian military officer, who insisted on anonymity, expressed fears over possible infiltration of the country’s system through the refugee camps. He declined to give further details on how the screening was being conducted.

He said, “Taking them in is not something to make noise about. You and I know that we are in a military situation here. This is a war zone with Boko Haram spies crawling all over the place.

“The number we take and where we take them are obviously a military intelligence affair and nobody can give you that information, even if you were to approach the authorities in Yaounde.”

In a related development, Boko Haram had been cultivating and recruiting local fighters among Cameroonian youths.

The sect is operating cells that have been in operation in Cameroon for over three years, recruiting through what a source described as “financial enticement and intimidation.”

Community leaders in the Far North region says thousands of Cameroonian youths had joined the ranks of Boko Haram since the beginning of the year.

“These are mostly young unemployed Cameroonians lured by handsome financial proposals by Boko Haram point men. Other Boko Haram sleeper cells are run by senior Islamists intimidated into doing the bidding of the sect,” one of the traditional leaders in the area, who refused to have his name in print, told our correspondent.

Recruitment of youths by the sect is said to be gaining ground in Cameroon and other neighbouring countries, raising fears that the activities of the insurgents might spread to other parts of West-African sub-region.

The sect had abducted seven members of the Fournier family from France in Cameroon in 2013. They were later released after a huge amount of money was reportedly paid as ransom.

Senior military sources confirmed that some high-ranking Boko Haram members arrested in Cameroon were exchanged for the release of the wife of the Cameroonian Vice-Prime Minister, Ahmadou Ali, and 16 members of his family who were abducted in Kolofata on July 27, as well as 10 Chinese road workers abducted in Waza in April, 2014.

In another related development, top Cameroonian military officials have insisted there is a close cooperation between the Nigerian and Cameroonian armies.

Information on the total number of Boko Haram insurgents detained in Cameroon has been classified as military intelligence.

However, it was learnt that the Cameroonian military had invited their Nigerian counterparts to interrogate Boko Haram suspects, Abakar Ali alias Mustapha Umar, Mahamat Ali and Issiaka Guere, who were arrested on September 23, 2014.

Other suspected members of the sect in detention, who include Cameroonians, will be tried by a special military tribunal in Yaounde, Cameroon, it was learnt.

“We cannot tell you their numbers now because investigations are still going on. When the investigations will be completed, there is the possibility that some of the people being held now on suspicion of being members of Boko Haram might be found to be innocent.

“Others would surely be finally identified as Cameroonians. The decision as to the fate of those found to be foreigners will be taken after the conclusion of the investigations. But I must tell you that besides Cameroonians and Nigerians, there are also members of Boko Haram from other neighbouring countries, which names we cannot cite now”, an official involved in the investigation disclosed.

However, the Cameroonian authorities are said to be reluctant on the repatriation of suspected leaders of the sect in their detention, as they might return to the battlefield should they escape

When our correspondent contacted the Director of Defence Information, Maj.-Gen Chris Olukolade, for his reaction to the issue, he said he would not comment on it.

“I won’t comment on that,” he said.

In August, the Cameroonian Army Spokesman, Lt.-Col. Didier Badjek, had said Nigerian troops had fled to Cameroon after intense fighting with Boko Haram.

But Olukolade, had refuted the desertion claim, saying the soldiers merely strayed into Cameroon.

While Cameroonian authorities said over 700 Nigerian soldiers fled Boko Haram advances into Cameroon, Nigerian authorities had insisted that only 480 went into Cameroonian territory on “technical manoeuver.”

In recent times, Nigerian military have been battling with mutiny and have set up court martials to try soldiers who fled from battle.

On August 27, the military leadership arrested several soldiers, who deserted the army. The arrested soldiers came from different battalions.

A month after, the Defence Headquarters announced that another set of 60 soldiers would be arraigned before a General Court Martial by military authorities in Abuja on October 2 for mutiny. The soldiers allegedly committed mutiny on August 4, 2014 by refusing to join troops in Maiduguri for “an operation.”

Their arraignment which was to take place at the Sani Abacha Barracks in Abuja came as some of the 12 soldiers convicted on September 15, 2014 by the GCM notified the Court of Appeal of their intention to challenge their sentences.

The GCM headed by Brig. Gen. C. Okonkwo had sentenced 12 out of 18 soldiers found guilty of mutiny among other offences to death. Five of them were discharged and acquitted and one sentenced to 28 days’ imprisonment with hard labour and reprimand.

Defeating Boko Haram, Nigeria’s Responsibility — Britain

Defeating Boko Haram, Nigeria’s responsibility — Britain
British Prime Minister, David Cameron

The British government has said there is a limit to what assistance it can offer Nigeria as Boko Haram renews its attacks in the North-East.

While acknowledging the complex nature of the insurgency, the British government, through its Minister of State, Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Joyce Anelay, stated that her country was in constant discussion with the Federal Government.

The minister, who was fielding questions from the House of Lords on Thursday, however, said the British government was cautious of what it said about the ongoing insurgency in Nigeria.

She told the parliament, “Nigeria faces a serious threat from Boko Haram. We believe that more than 3,000 people have been killed by Boko Haram this year and more than 1.5 million people have been displaced. We are aware of reports that Nigerian authorities have agreed to a ceasefire with Boko Haram and are in ongoing negotiations. We are also aware of reports of Boko Haram attacks since the ceasefire announcement. We monitor events closely.

“Boko Haram deliberately targets the weak and vulnerable, causing suffering in communities of differing faiths and ethnicities. It has no regard for human life. We are in continual discussion with the Nigerian authorities to press exactly as the noble Baroness says, and we give as much support as we can in intelligence matters.”

During the question-and-answer session, a member of parliament, Caroline Cox, who had made visits to areas worst hit by current militants’ insurrection, urged the British government to put pressure on Nigeria to be more effective in tackling the insurgency.

“I thank the minister for that sympathetic reply. Is she aware that I have visited areas afflicted by Boko Haram and found that the scale of suffering to which she refers massively exceeds that reported by the media?

“Despite reports of a peace agreement with Boko Haram, to which the Minister refers, local people do not believe that the federal and state authorities are sufficiently willing or able to stop Boko Haram’s reign of terror. Therefore, will Her Majesty’s government make the strongest possible representation to the government of Nigeria to do much more to implement effective policies to protect all its citizens from this escalating terrorism?” Cox said.

Responding to her questions and those posed by other members of the parliament, Anelay pointed out that Britain would give Nigeria the strongest support it could, adding that a Sentinel and Tornado GR4 aircraft had already been deployed to assist in the fight against Boko Haram.

She noted, “We are therefore most cautious in what we say in these matters. What I will say is that it is for the Nigerian authorities to resolve the matter. We will give the strongest support we can.”

We Won’t Support Jonathan in 2015 — Northern Elders

We won’t support Jonathan in 2015 — Northern elders
Prof. Ango Abdullahi

As President Goodluck Jonathan declares his intention to run for second term in 2015, leaders of the North, under the auspices of the Northern Elders Forum, have expressed their decision to support any presidential candidate presented by the All Progressives Congress in the 2015 election.

They expressed their grievances with the ruling Peoples Democratic Party over the automatic ticket issued to President Goodluck Jonathan to seek a second term in the election. This, the elders said, had prevented aspirants from the North from contesting on the platform of the party.

The national leadership of the PDP, including the Board of Trustees, the National Executive Council and the National Working Committee, had unanimously adopted Jonathan as the consensus presidential candidate of the party.

In separate interviews with our correspondent on Friday, the Deputy Chairman of the NEF, Dr. Paul Unongo and spokesperson of the forum, Prof. Ango Abdullahi, stated that despite Jonathan’s power of incumbency and the deployment of state resources at his disposal, he would not win the election if the region voted against him.

He said, “Our position has not changed. We don’t mind him contesting, but we are not going to work for him to become president of this country again because we don’t believe that we have had any president that has been so divisive; that has heightened religious tendencies, hatred, ethnic militancy, high rate of impunity and a tremendous amount of insensitivity.

“The majority of northerners and the majority of Nigerians will decide for us and for the APC. We are not into party politics, but the APC has shown respect and deference to the North by allowing the North to produce its (presidential) candidate. But the PDP shut the door, saying there is nobody else but Jonathan; that he is the best for Nigeria. That is a lie.

“If not from the North, let somebody else come to contest; we will support him.”

The Second Republic Minister of Steel decried the abduction of over 200 Chibok schoolgirls by Boko Haram on April 14 and that they remain in captivity over six months after.

He said despite the claim by the Federal Government that it had reached a ceasefire deal with the sect and that the girls would be released, the insurgents had continued to launch attacks and kidnap more people.

Similarly, Abdullahi stated that the NEF would carry out its threat to frustrate Jonathan’s re-election bid, as the President had failed to secure the release of the Chibok girls before the end of October.

The Presidency had dismissed the ultimatum issued to Jonathan by the forum on August 11, 2014 to produce the Chibok girls or forget about his 2015 ambition.

Abdullahi said, “We did not even put ‘if.’ He should just forget about 2015. We cannot support him for 2015 for whatever reason. What we said would only confuse those who doubt; we have never doubted his failure. We have always believed that the man is incapable of running this country.”

Lt. Colonel, 15 Others Jailed Over Chibok Girls’ Abduction

Lt. Colonel, 15 Others Jailed Over Chibok Girls’ Abduction
Director of Defence Information, Maj.-Gen. Chris Olukolade

The Nigerian Army has sentenced three officers and 13 other soldiers to two years’ imprisonment each over the April 14, 2014 abduction of over 200 schoolchildren from their hostel in Chibok, Borno State, by Boko Haram insurgents.

The soldiers, including a Lieutenant Colonel, a Captain and a Second lieutenant, were arraigned before a General Military Court Martial at the Maxwell Khobe Military Cantonment, Rukuba in Jos, Plateau State, in October 2014.

The officers are Col. A. O. Ojo, Capt. O. O. Ogunrinde, and 2nd Lieutenant V.I. Godknows.

Although the trial started at the headquarters of the 3rd Armoured Division of the Army in Jos, the court was moved to Kaduna where the judgment was delivered on Tuesday.

The GCM panel convened by the General Officer Commanding I Division, Kaduna, Maj.Gen. K. C. Osuji, comprised Brig. Gen. Ogunlade (President); Col. J. O. Sokoya, Col. M. Kadiri, Col. M. W. Abubakar, Col. A. A. Bamgbose, Col. A. Garba and Col E.M . Albara

Our correspondent learnt on Tuesday that the panel concluded that the prosecution was able to prove the case against the soldiers.

But the Defence counsel to Col. Ojo, Mr. Shuaibu Isah, told our correspondent on the telephone that the judgment was a far cry from the evidence presented before the court.

Isah said he would appeal against the judgment to the confirming authority, which is the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Kenneth Minimah.

He said, “We are not satisfied with the judgment of the court. We intend to file an appeal against this verdict before the confirming authorities…”

A source at the court said that Ojo was convicted on two counts of failing to reinforce Chibok when it came under Boko Haram attack on April 14 and for allegedly releasing information without verification to the Army authorities.

He said the “unverified information” caused the Defence Headquarters to issue a ‘false’ statement on the release of the abducted girls.

The source added that Ojo, who was said to have resumed duty the day before the attack, had responded to the charge of failing to reinforce Chibok by explaining that he got the information on the Chibok attack at his location in Biu by 1a.m.

The Lt. Col. was also said to have explained that he had other operational issues such as his inability to notify the nearby military formation in Damboa.

On the charge that he gave unverified information to the Army authorities, the officer said he never gave any figure on the “rescued or abducted girls.”

It was gathered that the lawyers to Godknows told the court martial that their client, who was charged with cowardly behaviour, was at the Chibok location with 13 soldiers armed with AK 47 but with limited rounds of ammunition to confront over 200 heavily armed Boko Haram fighters.

Another source said that Godknows left four men to defend the camp while he took nine others to confront the insurgents before pulling back due to their high number and overwhelming fire power.

The charges against the soldiers which centred on failure to perform military duty carry a maximum of two years imprisonment.

Buhari Will End Insurgency, Corruption — Amaechi

Buhari Will End Insurgency, Corruption — Amaechi
Rivers State Governor, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi

The Director-General of the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Organisation, Rotimi Amaechi, on Tuesday called on Nigerians to vote out President Goodluck Jonathan in the 2015 elections.

He said only a “strong leader” like Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) could tackle insurgency and corruption in the country.

Amaechi said prayers alone could not rescue the nation from the brink of collapse and underdevelopment.

Amaechi, who is also the Rivers State governor, addressed journalists in Lagos at a maiden press briefing on his plans to drive the party’s efforts to win the 2015 presidential election.

Also at the briefing was the Chairman of the APC in Rivers State, Davies Ibiamu-Ikanya.

The APC had, last week, announced Amaechi as the Director-General of the Buhari Presidential Campaign Organisation.

Amaechi also promised to drive an issue-based campaign that would ensure victory for the APC.

He said the APC presidential campaign would commence a nationwide campaign in the early part of next year.

Amaechi said President Jonathan’s administration was too weak to tackle insurgency.

He recalled that when Chadian rebels invaded Borno State in the past, it was Buhari that deployed troops to chase them away.

He said, “You need a strong leader to chase away Boko Haram or Boko Haram will chase us away. There are reports that 32 persons have been killed in Bauchi and Gombe; so you need a Buhari to actually fight the insurgents.

“Insurgency continues not because we have a bad military; our soldiers are well trained. It is because they are not well funded. The period when the money gets to the military and before it is released, somewhere, some amount of money disappears.

“So, we have to deal with the issue of corruption and that is where the military is having problem. If they are not properly equipped, they cannot fight insurgency. So, we have to deal with the issue of corruption.

“You want to kill 50 military officers who are saying, ‘please equip us properly, I can’t go to the battlefront without the right weapon. Now you are sending him to fight a man with RPG and you gave him an old AK47. He says you are risking his life. They have a right to protest that. You don’t kill them for that.”

When our correspondent asked him how Buhari would tackle post-election violence in the North if he did not win the presidential election as witnessed in 2011, Amaechi said the game had changed, insisting that Buhari would win.

He said the issue of violence would not arise because Nigerians would massively vote for Buhari, because they are tired of the Jonathan administration.

Amaechi, who berated President Goodluck Jonathan for condoning corruption, urged Nigerians to take action and not believe that only prayers could solve their problems.

He added, “The former Central Bank of Nigeria’s governor said $20bn was missing, he (Jonathan) sacked the CBN governor for saying that but the Minister of Finance said they could not account for $10.8bn. Whether it was $10.8bn or $20bn, the fact is that something was missing…somebody should be resigning. But in Nigeria, nobody cares about that.

“The Presidency did not bother but was asking Nigerians to pray as if God created prayers for only Nigerians. ‘Don’t worry we are praying, God will settle 2015 for us’. God has created us with brains and hands, just like he did for the British. They have legs, just like we have our own legs. Why do we go back to God all the time. We don’t take time to find solutions to our problems after praying. But here we pray and after praying, we do nothing. We will be waiting for God to cause miracles to happen.”

Speaking on how he would combine the office of the governor and the campaign group, Amaechi said he would rely on the help of his deputy who he described as “very efficient.”

Amaechi also advised President Jonathan to caution his spokespersons against falsifying facts.

He added, “After my appointment, people tried to tarnish my image that I have not paid eight months salary. Anybody who said I have not paid him salary should come forward. I have paid up to December. You can call Rivers State.

“I was surprised that a presidential spokesman said I funded the election of Gen. Buhari, and that I owe teachers in Rivers State eight months’ salaries.

“And I asked the question, for you to be a presidential spokesman; facts and statistics must be on your palm. You shouldn’t joke with facts.”

Christmas: Military Restricts Vehicular Movement in Borno

Christmas: Military Restricts Vehicular Movement in Borno
Nigerian Soldiers

The Nigerian military on Tuesday imposed restriction on vehicular movement in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, in order to check any security breach.

Also, a former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, and the Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, have urged Nigerians to remain security conscious as they celebrate Christmas and prepare for the New Year.

The military in a statement said the decision was made following security reports at its disposal.

A statement signed by the Army Public Relations Officer, Headquarters of the 7 Division, the Nigerian Army, Maiduguri, Col. Sani Usman, claimed that there was a concerted effort by the Boko Haram sect to unleash terror on some parts of Borno State, particularly in the Maiduguri metropolis, during the Christmas celebration.

The statement which was made available to journalists on Tuesday said the Nigerian Army, Division 7, Maiduguri, in consultation with the Borno State government and other security agencies had decided to ban all forms of vehicular movement in the state from 6pm on Wednesday, December 24, to 7am on Sunday, December 28, 2014.

The statement however added that the directive excluded those on essential services, such as medical services, fire service and the media who were duly authorised by their establishments.

It also explained that the measure became necessary in order to further safeguard lives and properties of law-abiding citizens in the state.

The military also wished the people of the state a hitch-free celebration. It also appealed to the members of the public to be more vigilant and security conscious throughout the period and report any suspicious person or movement to the nearest security agency.

It assured all law abiding citizens that the military was doing all it could to root out terrorists from the society while calling for continued support and understanding in the fight against Boko Haram insurgency and terrorism in the state and the country at large.

Atiku, in a goodwill message by his media office in Abuja on Wednesday, said that irrespective of the difficult challenges facing the country, Christians and indeed all Nigerians should celebrate the Yuletide with hope and prayers that God would heal our land.

“Our country is in trouble of maladministration marked by insecurity, but we should still celebrate Christmas with hope, because it is a season of joy. We should celebrate it with prayers and deep reflections. God will heal our land and we shall prosper again,’’ the former Vice President said.

Atiku urged Nigerians irrespective of their faith to promote peace and harmonious coexistence for the unity, stability, progress and development of our nation.

He wished Nigerians and all the people of goodwill a merry Christmas.

Oshiomhole, in a message on Tuesday, said that the state government had updated payment of workers’ salaries, at a time when many states were unable to pay salaries in arrears of three to four months.

The governor advised Nigerians to rise above ethnicity, religious preference and clannish inclinations used by unpatriotic persons to exploit and divide them.

He also urged them not to forget that poverty and bad governance were not defined by religion or ethnicity but by inefficient leadership.

“Despite the economic hardship and lean resources accruing to the state from the federation account, the good news is that the state government has paid all workers in the state civil service, including the teachers and their salaries for December 2014 to enable them to enjoy the Yuletide with their loved ones.

“This is in contrast to what obtains in many states of the federation, especially the Peoples Democratic Party-controlled states, where workers are being owed salaries in arrears of three, four months and even, in some cases, up to eight months.”

Jonathan’s Declaration Has Occult Undertone — Rev. Okotie

Jonathan’s Presidential Election Declaration Has Occult Undertone — Rev. Okotie
Rev. Chris Okotie

The founder and presiding pastor of Household of God Church International Ministries, Pastor Chris Okotie has said that President Goodluck Jonathan’s declaration for the 2015 presidential election on November 11, 2014 has occult significance.

Okotie, who wrote on his Facebook page on Friday, emphasised that the exact date the President made his declaration had a ritualistic undertone.

He said, “The implication of Dr. Jonathan’s declaration on that day (11-11-2014) has occult significance. When the number is repeated, it takes a greater ritualistic intensity.

“In this case, we have 11-11-11, because when you add the date 11-11-2014 as a year together, you arrive at 11 also. This is in consonance with occult numerology.

“In the pre-natural world, the number 11 is a powerful occult number, it represents judgment, destruction and death of man. Each digit in the 11-11-2014 date, when added together, viz: 1+1+1+1+2+0+1+4, you get 11. That’s why the declaration was done on 11/11/2014, which is the highest level of occult numerology.

“This sacred number in the occult world demonstrates an appeasement of the powers of darkness to favour the supplicant. The name of Satan in Latin is LVX. L is 50, V is 5 and X is 10. When you add that together, you get 65. When you add 6 + 5, you get 11. Satan’s number is 11.”

He said the question would be whether the President’s declaration was orchestrated by occult considerations or a mere coincidence.

In answering the question, Okotie said, “Since 11 represents judgment, destruction and death of man, can we extrapolate from the experiences of President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration so far that number 11 has been prevalent in our nation? Has there been spiritual judgment, has there been destruction and death on a large scale? You, be the judge.

While comparing the President to some rulers in the Old Testament in the Bible, he noted that the President did not belong to the Davidic genealogy but to the house of Saul and invoked the spirit of Jeroboam.

He said, “President Jonathan does not belong to the Davidic genealogy; he belongs to the house of Saul and invokes the spirit of Jeroboam. He swears by the Lord and Malcham. He that hath an ear let him hear.”

While calling on the church and the Christian community to beware, he said, “If the Church of Jesus Christ appreciates this understanding, they’ll be more reluctant to gravitate in the direction of President Jonathan, even though the leadership of CAN and PFN have made a subtle endorsement of his candidacy.”

How Jonathan Can Ensure Peaceful Elections — APC, Sagay, Falae, Others

Opposition party, the All Progressives Congress, APC, yesterday welcomed President Goodluck Jonathan’s New Year message to ensure next year’s elections are free, fair and devoid of violence, but listed conditions that must be met to achieve this.

How Jonathan Can Ensure Peaceful 2015 Elections
President Goodluck Jonathan

Similarly, National Chairman of Social Democratic Party, SDP, Chief Olu Falae, eminent lawyer, Professor Itse Sagay (SAN), and other stakeholders have all agreed that once the elections are free, fair and transparent, there will not be any basis for anybody to react negatively.

APC, in a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said it welcomed the stated commitment of President Jonathan, in his New Year message, to the conduct of free, fair and violence-free elections this year, but urged the President to match the commitment with action.

According to the statement, “the party expressed satisfaction that the President and his party have come out publicly to join APC in pledging commitment to successful and violence-free polls next month.

‘’In a statement we issued on December 28, 2014, we assured Nigerians that we will do everything in our power to make the 2015 elections violence-free. Since then, PDP National Chairman Adamu Muazu and the President have joined us in making similar pledges.

“This is a welcome development that will gladden the hearts of our citizens who are very apprehensive about the forthcoming elections.”

How to achieve it — APC

APC, however, said the best way to make the elections free, fair and devoid of violence is for the Federal Government to ensure a level-playing field for all the parties by not tampering with the independence of INEC, not using the security agencies to witch-hunt the opposition and not deliberately disenfranchising all those who are qualified to vote.

“If an election is free, fair and transparent and seen to be so by all, it will be easy for all concerned to accept the outcome, and there will be no violence. Violence only occurs when there is a realization that the process has been skewed against some in favour of others.”

It restated its assurance to Nigerians and the international community that it will do all in its power to make sure that the 2015 general elections are violence-free.

APC said: “We also restate our stand that even with the little time left for the elections to hold, a meeting of the leadership of the two main political parties, APC and Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, will send a powerful message to our compatriots and indeed the international community and douse the tension that is building up ahead of the elections.”

I agree with him, but… — Prof. Sagay

Eminent lawyer, Professor Itse Sagay, in his reaction, said though he agrees with President Jonathan’s speech to deal with all those who foment trouble during the elections, the President must ensure he conducts a free, fair and credible election next month.

Speaking with Vanguard, he said: “Those are the two points in the whole story. If he will not tolerate what happened in 2011, he must ensure that the elections are free, fair and credible.

“If they are free, fair and credible, there will not be any basis for anybody to react negatively.

“Once he has agreed that the elections will be free, fair and credible, in other words, votes must count and the person that is declared winner is the one that received the highest votes, then honestly what he is saying is logical.

“In such a situation, what happened in 2011 cannot be tolerated because no one should resort to violence or anger against the wishes of the people. So, I agree with him.”

Deal with anyone found culpable — Falae

On his part, National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party, SDP, Chief Olu Falae, said those found culpable of attempting to foment trouble during and after the elections should be dealt with according to the law.

He said: “The authorities should ensure that we have free and fair elections and that anyone trying to disrupt elections or cause violence should be dealt with according to the law. That is what civilized societies do and that is what we must have.”

We agree with Jonathan — Arewa Youths

Throwing its weight behind the President’s decision not to tolerate post-election violence, Arewa Youth Consultative Forum, AYCF, said it concurred with his decision.

Its National President, Alhaji Yerima Shettima, who spoke with Vanguard, said: “I concur with the President because the kind of statement emanating from these political actors is not encouraging.

“Sometimes they make statements and you begin to wonder whether they are truly Nigerians. The country is bigger than anybody: be it Jonathan or the opposition parties.

“We must not allow the country to be run as it if we are running a banana republic where there is no law and order and where people get away with evil. People must know their limitations.”

He need not pay lip service — LP

Also speaking, the Labour Party, LP, urged the President not to pay lip service to his statement, but must follow it with actions.

Its National Secretary, Mr. Kayode Ajulo, in a chat, said: “I concur with his statements because the President owes all Nigerians the duty to ensure law and order.

“Whether we like or not, the aftermath of the 2011 elections was a breakdown of law and order and it is his duty to ensure that all Nigerians are safe.

“Labour Party was the first party that raised issues over inciting statements and that they must be stopped. I think the President need not pay lip service to it. He should follow it with action.”

Afenifere

In its reaction, pan-Yoruba socio-cultural organization, Afenifere, said it was imperative for the Federal Government to maintain law and order during and after the elections.

Afenifere’s National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Yinka Odumakin, said: “I think the two are linked. There is a need to conduct free and fair elections and also ensure that losers accept the results of the elections.

“But no serious nation will allow people take laws into their hands and begin to perpetuate violence in the name of elections.

“I have heard comments like rig and roast before the elections and I think there is no responsible leadership that should allow the lives of its citizens to be put in jeopardy because some politicians want power.

“People should vie for elective positions, but they should not shed the blood of Nigerians because they want power. I believe there is a need to maintain law and order. It is only those who want to cause trouble or mayhem that should be afraid of such directive.

“Those who want peace for the country have nothing to worry about and elections should not be about bloodbath. It should not be about violence or killing of citizens, who the politicians profess they want to serve.”
