WTF Youth Olympic Qualifiers: Nigeria Get Tough Opponents

National Youth Games gold medallist Esther Godwin is expected to face an uphill task when she faces the winner between, Korea’s Park Bo-eui and Russia’s Turutina Yulia in her first match in the women’s -63kg class at the World Taekwondo Federation’s Youth Olympic qualifiers in Chinese Taipei on Thursday.

Bo-eui is favoured to beat the Russian, but it would be Godwin’s first international fight.

Ogeh Ogochukwu, competing in the women’s -49kg class, will face the winner between Peru’s Huaman Georgina and Chile’s Rios Francisca on Thursday.

On Friday, the trio of Iniobong Ekong, Isah Adamu and Bashir Mohammed will take on their respective opponents in the qualifiers.

The draw on Wednesday pitted Ekong against the winner between Croatia’s Ivina Babic and Canada’s Jerom Andrea in the women’s -55kg class, while Mohammed will confront Cote d’Ivoire’s Aaron Fran in the men’s -55kg.

Adamu, who will be competing in the men’s -63kg, will face Peru’s Oblitas.

A total of 100 athletes – 50 men and 50 women – are expected to secure their qualifications to the 2014 World Youth Olympics in Nanjing, China from the Taipei’s qualifiers.

Athletes who fail to excel from the qualifiers in Taipei will have to compete at the continental level to ascertain his or her place at the global championships holding later in the year in China.
