Tension is brewing at the House of Representatives as its support staff are threatening to go on strike this week over non-payment of allowances dating back to 2011. The aggrieved staff have given the Office of the Clerk of the Lower Chamber to pay up or they will be compelled to disrupt activities in the National Assembly.
According to documents made available to Daily Sun, some support workers, who participated in the election of the present Pan-African Parliament president, Bethel Amadi in 2011 in South Africa are yet to be paid.
In a letter dated February 14, 2012 and addressed to the Speaker, Rep. Amadi had appealed for the payment of the outstanding N66,573,510.00.
A senior staff at the clerk’s office, who doesn’t want to be named, said that some support staff were being owed by the management. He, however, denied that the office was not disposed to paying the workers.
One of the support staff countered the claim of the clerk’s office, revealing that all the letters written to the office had been treated with levity. He said: “We have written several letters to management, giving the breakdown of the payments but to no avail. This is just one out of the several non-payments of approved allowances in the last two years.
“Most of these payments were approved by the Speaker, Hon. Aminu Tambuwal, but the management refused to effect payment.” Another source said,”we wanted to carry placards on November 12, the first time we were expecting Mr President to deliver the 2014 budget, but the management quickly set up a welfare committee.
“Two weeks after, we’ve not heard from the committee, but before this week runs out, if we do not hear from the committee, then, we shall embark on strike. There are other issues which we will expose in this wing of the chamber because our colleagues in the Senate are not treated this way.
“They pay them promptly unlike here that you have to beg to get anything done,” the source noted.
