Some Nigerians resident in Cote d’Ivoire on Friday in Abidjan appealed to President Goodluck Jonathan to extend scholarship awards to Nigerians living abroad.

They spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria when they turned out en masse to welcome Jonathan at the Felix Houphouet-Boigny Airport.

The President is attending a meeting of ECOWAS Heads of Government with the Japanese Prime Minister.

Chief Ejike Williams, the Vice-President of the Nigerian Community in Cote d’Ivoire, said such a programme would be of great assistance.

He said it would also put many idle Nigerians abroad on the right track of life.

“This programme will be more beneficial to Nigerians in Cote d’Ivoire. The level of idleness here is too much, and something seriously needs to be done,’’ Williams said.

Also speaking, Alhaji Musa Oyedele, the Chairman of Nigerian Community in Ajame, in Abidjan, said the move of giving Nigerians in Cote d’Ivoire the opportunity of education would be beneficial.

He said it would reduce indulgence in crime and trafficking.

“People take to crime and illegal means of making money because they are idle, we need government to do something,’’ Oyedele said.

However, Mr Bright Moses, the President of the Association of Nigerian Youths in Cote d’Ivoire, lauded President Jonathan’s Transformation Agenda.

“We are proud to have a President who listens to his people. We urge him to remain undistracted in delivering his electoral promises to Nigerians,’’ he said.
