The implementation process for the code of conduct for national players will start with the Championship for African Nations billed to kick off in South Africa January 11. The decision to set a start off date was reached at a football top level meeting held between the Minister of Sports Bolaji Abdullahi and Nigeria Football Federation members led by Aminu Maigari on Tuesday in Abuja.

Minister of Sports, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi

A person with knowledge of the details of the meeting told The Punch that the meeting dwelt on two major issues.

He said, “The first part was to review the NFF detail plans for the World Cup.

“The minister is eager to know what plans they have; look through any kind problems they may encounter and ensure that the NFF starts off the programme on time. The meeting will continue next week on this aspect because (Stephen) Keshi could not attend.

“The meeting agreed on the quick implementation of the code of conduct for the players and it is starting with CHAN in South Africa. That has been concluded.”

The meeting could not conclude discussion of the Brazil 2014 World Cup programme because Keshi was said to be bereaved. He is expected back in Abuja later on Wednesday. The meeting was rescheduled to hold next week Wednesday. Apart from Maigari, there were also in attendance the NFF General Secretary, Musa Amadu, board member Chris Green and Technical Director, Emmanuel Ikpeme.

The Eagles coach was billed to make the major input on the World Cup programme and that was why that aspect had to be moved to next week.

Nigeria kick-started preparations for CHAN on Tuesday in the Federal Capital, Abuja with a training session held at the FIFA Goal Project site of the National Stadium. All 30 players invited for the camping arrived in Abuja by Monday evening as directed by the NFF.

Those who make the team to the competition will sign the code conduct which has been printed as a booklet. Each player will keep a signed copy while the other will be filled by the NFF.

The code of conduct for national players is meant to keep the players in tune with the disciplinary requirement of being in the national team. It dwells on the usually contentious match-win bonus which created international embarrassment for the country when the Eagles embarked on strike in Namibia and arrived in Brazil late for the FIFA Confederations Cup.
